This hilarious comedy is about a charming, social man, Elwood P. Dowd, who has an invisible friend named Harvey, who happens to be a six-foot-tall rabbit. Elwood's sister Veta has had enough, once Elwood attempts to introduce Harvey to her friends. She decides to commit Elwood to an insane asylum, but in the midst of explaining the situation, Veta becomes so hysterical that the doctors mistakenly diagnose her as a crazy woman. A series of misunderstandings lead to many chaotic, humorous and messy situations. Once the mistake at the insane asylum is corrected, it becomes a game of chasing Elwood around in order to take him back to the asylum. The play reinforces the need for optimism, faith, and friendship in this world, and offers a reminder of the importance of loving people for who they are. Harvey received critical and popular success and was awarded the 1945 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
